What it meansThe adepts called it the stone that is not a stone. Its formula, solve et coagula, dissolve and recombine, applies to the operator as much as the metal — which is why the literature insists the work cannot be done by a man who has not been changed by it.

The Intersection of Divine Grace and Human Suffering

An instrument of execution turned, in Christian reading, into the sign that love meets suffering.

What it meansA vertical meeting a horizontal: the divine axis crossing the human, with the intersection at the point of suffering. The Christian reading is that the instrument is not transcended but kept — the sign of the faith is the thing that killed its founder, left legible.

The Serpent of Eternity

The end feeds the beginning: nothing is lost, only transformed — or nothing ever escapes the loop.

What it meansThe earliest drawing of it carries the legend hen to pan — the all is one — written inside the circle. The serpent eats itself and is not consumed, which is the alchemists' figure for a process that supplies its own material and therefore never has to stop.
