The Barred Ascent
Fire's upward triangle crossed by a horizontal bar: air, the hot and moist element.
Air is hot and moist, the second of the two elements Aristotle held to move naturally upward, and its sign is the ascending triangle crossed by a single horizontal bar. The apex points up because air rises, as fire does; the bar is what tells the two apart. That is all the bar does. It is the differentia within the pair, and the tradition attaches no separate meaning to it — the same bar appears on earth for the same reason, distinguishing it from water below. The bar is drawn as the triangle's midsegment, joining the midpoints of the two slanted sides, so it is exactly half the base long and sits at half the height. In the tarot the element governs the suit of Swords, and with it thought, speech and division — an assignment systematised by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in the late 1880s.
Light
Intellect, communication and perspective. The element of separation in the useful sense: telling one thing from another clearly enough to reason about either.
Shadow
Abstraction cut loose from anything it describes — restlessness, over-analysis, and division practised for its own sake.
