Hesychasm

An Eastern Orthodox monastic practice of repeating the Jesus Prayer in rhythm with the breath, aimed at direct experience of divine light.

What it isIts central theological defence rests on a specific formal distinction between God's utterly unknowable essence and God's uncreated energies, which a person can genuinely experience — a technical doctrine, hammered out in fourteenth-century church councils against determined opposition, that underlies the entire practice's legitimacy.

The Sacraments

Rites the church holds to convey grace directly, not merely to symbolise it — seven in Catholic and Orthodox practice.

What it isAugustine's definition set the pattern still used: a visible sign of an invisible grace. The count of seven was fixed only at the Council of Trent (1547) — earlier centuries counted anywhere from two to twelve, and most Protestant traditions still hold only two.
