Mercury, or Quicksilver, is one of the three heavenly substances (Tria Prima) of Paracelsian alchemy, alongside Sulfur and Salt. It represents the fluid, volatile "Spirit" of a substance, the vital life force that bridges the gap between the soul (Sulfur) and the body (Salt). Because of its physical properties as a liquid metal, it symbolizes fluidity, transformation, and the intellect. Mercury is the great transmuting agent, dissolving old forms so that new, higher forms can coalesce.
