What it meansThe adepts called it the stone that is not a stone. Its formula, solve et coagula, dissolve and recombine, applies to the operator as much as the metal — which is why the literature insists the work cannot be done by a man who has not been changed by it.

An ancient geometric problem symbolizing the alchemical attempt to unite the earthly and the divine.

What it meansCircle and square stand for heaven and earth, spirit and body, and the alchemists set the task as the union of the two. Maier's emblem draws it with a man and a woman inside. The problem was proved impossible in 1882 — which the tradition had already made its point.
