British astrologer who founded a major astrology magazine in 1890 and industrialised the mass production of character-based horoscope readings.
Who they wereHe was prosecuted twice for fortune-telling, acquitted the first time but convicted and fined the second, dying months after that trial. His shift from predicting future events toward describing personal 'character' instead was primarily a legal defence strategy, only secondarily a philosophy — one that has shaped mass-market astrology ever since.

Placidus and the House-Division Question
The dominant modern method for dividing an astrological chart into twelve houses, now used as the default by most Western astrologers.
What it isAt least five competing house-division systems exist, and they genuinely produce different results for the exact same birth chart. This particular system became the default largely because a widely used published almanac happened to adopt it in the 1820s — a case of practical convenience settling a real, still-unresolved technical disagreement among astrologers.
