In depth psychology, the Wise Old Man (Senex) represents the archetype of meaning, spiritual insight, and moral authority emerging from the depths of the collective unconscious. Manifesting in myths and dreams as a sage, hermit, priest, mentor, or elder (such as Merlin, Chiron, or Tiresias), this figure appears when the conscious ego encounters an impasse and requires wisdom beyond its own contrivance. Jung identified the archetype as the personification of the spiritual principle and the Logos within the psyche.
