Originally a term from Gnosticism and astronomy denoting the conjunction of celestial bodies and paired divine emanations (Aeons), the Syzygy was adopted by Carl Jung to describe the archetypal pairing of Anima and Animus within the human psyche. The Syzygy represents the primordial polarity of solar and lunar, conscious and unconscious, Logos and Eros. In alchemical philosophy (the Chymical Wedding or Mysterium Coniunctionis), the reconciliation of this divine pair constitutes the supreme goal of the Great Work.
