On 8 October 2009, during a high-priced "Spiritual Warrior" retreat conducted by New Age motivational speaker James Arthur Ray at Angel Valley Retreat Center near Sedona, Arizona, an overcrowded non-traditional sweat lodge structure caused the deaths of Kirby Brown, James Shore, and Liz Neuman, and hospitalized 18 others with heat exhaustion and organ failure. Ray was convicted of three counts of negligent homicide in June 2011. Indigenous leaders cited the tragedy as the lethal consequence of commercialized cultural appropriation warned against in the 1993 Lakota Declaration of War Against Exploiters of Lakota Spirituality.
