The Great Mother is one of the most fundamental archetypes of the collective unconscious, representing the primordial feminine container of all manifestation. Elaborated extensively by Erich Neumann and Carl Jung, the archetype possesses a bipolar structure: the Good Mother who nurtures, shelters, and grants biological and spiritual rebirth, and the Terrible Mother who devours, entraps, and dissolves consciousness in regression (exemplified by Kali, Tiamat, and the Gorgon).
