Peyote and the Native American Church
Peyote buttons found in a Texas cave have been radiocarbon-dated to roughly 3700 BCE. The Native American Church itself is far younger, incorporated in Oklahoma in 1918 — an ancient substance inside a twentieth-century legal institution built specifically to protect its use.
