The passageThe Greek houtōs means 'in this manner', not 'so much'. The verse is describing the way God loved rather than measuring the quantity — it points forward to the giving, not upward to an intensity. The most quoted sentence in the New Testament is usually quoted with its grammar reversed.

The Golden Rule

Make your own wish to be treated well the standard for others — who may not want what you want.
The passageHillel, a generation earlier, gave the rule negatively: what is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour — that is the whole Torah. The positive form requires action rather than restraint, and the difference between the two is most of the ethics.
