Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772) was a renowned Swedish scientist, engineer, and mining official who experienced a spiritual awakening in his mid-fifties. In monumental visionary works such as Arcana Coelestia (1749–1756) and Heaven and Hell (1758), Swedenborg documented visionary journeys into spiritual spheres. He formulated the Doctrine of Correspondences: the principle that every natural object on earth reflects and embodies an internal spiritual reality.
