Aleister Crowley

Initiated into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1898, he later broke from it, founded his own order in 1907, and headed a separate international magical fraternity from 1925 until his death — his influence on twentieth-century occultism runs through institutions he built himself, not folk tradition.
