Mana, Tapu and the Tohunga Suppression Act
Two Māori concepts — spiritual power and sacred restriction — borrowed into English and later flattened into generic magical jargon.
SignificanceIn Māori understanding, mana is authority and spiritual power flowing from the atua and ancestors, held for one's people and grown or lost through conduct. Tapu marks what is set apart under the gods' protection, balanced by noa, the ordinary; tohunga were its expert guardians.
The FindingBoth words entered Western vocabulary in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries stripped of their original relational and legal meaning. New Zealand then criminalised Māori healers outright under a 1907 law that stood for over half a century before repeal.

A 1990s bestselling book presented as a true account of a woman's walkabout with a secret Aboriginal tribe, later formally investigated and disputed.
SignificanceIts publisher reclassified the book as fiction, and an Aboriginal cultural organisation formally investigated its claims and sent a delegation to the American publisher to dispute them directly. No such people, journey or initiation has ever been substantiated.
