Mana, Tapu and the Tohunga Suppression Act
Both words entered Western vocabulary in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries stripped of their original relational and legal meaning. New Zealand then criminalised Māori healers outright under a 1907 law that stood for over half a century before repeal.
