The Penetrating Root
Gradual influence that enters from below without forcing — and, too mild, never takes hold at all.
Xun reads from the bottom up as broken, whole, whole. The yielding line at the base is read as penetration from underneath: wind, which enters everywhere without forcing anything, and wood, whose roots work their way into the ground. Its attribute in the Shuogua is penetration, and it is the eldest daughter, since the single yin line stands in the first place. In the Later Heaven arrangement it holds the south-east. Doubled, it forms hexagram 57, which carries the same name and is glossed by both of its images, wind and wood.
Light
Stands for gradual influence, adaptability, patient and persistent effort, and the kind of gentleness that reaches its end by not opposing anything.
Shadow
Can mean indecision, excessive compliance, influence exerted by insinuation rather than openly, and an effort so mild that it never takes hold.
