The I Ching hexagram of Attraction, showing how quiet receptivity and gentle mutual appeal create lasting influence.
Xian sets Dui, the joyous, lake, above Gen, keeping still, the mountain: a lake held in the hollow at the summit. Dui is the youngest daughter and Gen the youngest son, so the strong places itself beneath the weak, which the tradition reads as courtship, the man taking the initiative by yielding precedence. The name is the character for feeling with its heart radical removed, indicating an influence that works without deliberate intent. The Judgement holds that to take a maiden to wife brings good fortune, and the six line texts rise through the body, from the toes to the jaws.
Light
Signifies attraction, receptivity, and the influence exerted without force by those who make themselves easy to approach; the tradition takes it as the hexagram of courtship and of marriage.
Shadow
The uppermost line places influence in the jaws, cheeks and tongue, which is to say mere talk. Attraction can be manufactured, and impulse can scatter into restless coming and going.
