Grace
Adornment and Its Limit
Beauty lights the form, never the substance — good for small matters, never for weighty ones.
Grace, Bi, places Keeping Still, Mountain, above the Clinging, Fire. The Image is fire at the foot of the mountain, throwing its light upward so that the heights above are lit and made beautiful. That illumination is real but partial, reaching only what stands near it, and this sets the hexagram's limit. Grace here means form, ornament and the clarity that beauty gives a thing, never the substance of the thing itself. The judgement grants success but says that in small matters alone is it favourable to undertake something, and the Image draws the same line: the superior man may clear up current affairs in this manner, yet dares not decide controversial issues by it.
Light
Signifies beauty of form, refinement, good taste, and the clarity that comes of presenting a matter well; grace that brings order to ordinary affairs.
Shadow
Can represent ornament without substance, style mistaken for merit, or the temptation to settle a weighty question by appearances rather than by its weight.
