Heaven and Earth Unite

Above and below actually meet, and things flourish, with the warning that no plain lacks its slope.

Peace places the receptive earth of Kun above the creative heaven of Qian, and the inversion is the whole point. Heaven's nature is to rise and earth's is to sink, so with earth set above the two move towards each other and their forces mingle, where the opposite arrangement would draw them apart. The Judgement records this as the small departing and the great approaching. In the twelve sovereign hexagrams, the series that maps the year, this figure holds the first month, when the light lines have grown to fill the lower half. The Image has the ruler complete the course of heaven and earth, regulating their gifts and so aiding the people.
