The Dragon Ascending
The first hexagram of the I Ching, symbolizing pure creative power, spiritual leadership, and purposeful action.
Qian is the only hexagram made of six whole lines, Heaven over Heaven, and it takes the name of its element because the trigram of the Creative is simply doubled. Its Judgement grants it the four attributes traditionally rendered as sublime success furthering through perseverance. The Image in the Ten Wings is the movement of heaven, ceaseless in its strength, from which the superior man draws the resolve to make himself strong and untiring. The six lines trace a dragon: hidden in the deep at the bottom, flying in the heavens in the fifth place, and arrogant at the top, where it has cause to repent.
Light
Stands for originating power, firm purpose, and leadership exercised in its proper season. It carries the strength of effort sustained without exhaustion and of a course held through to completion.
Shadow
Unrelieved yang can harden into arrogance, domination, and force applied without rest. The arrogant dragon of the top line, having climbed too far, finds no room above it and must repent.
