In Proverbs 8, Divine Wisdom (Chokhmah in Hebrew, Sophia in Greek) speaks in the first person, calling out from the city gates. She reveals her eternal pre-existence before the mountains were settled or the ocean depths brought forth. Acting as the divine architect or delight (Amon) beside God, Wisdom rejoices in the inhabited world and delights in humankind. This passage forms the biblical foundation for Christian Logos and Sophia theology and Jewish Kabbalistic Chokhmah.
