The Word Archetype
Borrowed Word, Later Pedigree
An ancient theological word, borrowed in 1919 for a use no ancient author intended.
What it isArchetypos means first-moulded — the original from which impressions are struck. The word carries the whole doctrine inside it: what is stamped can be seen everywhere, and the die itself never appears in the record it leaves.
The FindingJung's "archetype" first appeared in 1919, in an English translation read in London — and the ancient pedigree now printed beneath it, Philo through Dionysius, was assembled thirty-five years later, in the 1954 revision of a 1934 lecture.

The Anima
Four Names, One Paragraph
The inner feminine archetype in the male psyche, guiding emotional depth, relational sensitivity, and creative intuition.
What it isEve, Helen, Mary, Sophia — instinct, romance, devotion, wisdom. The four stages come from one passage about alchemy and are modelled on the grades of a late-classical cult, not derived from cases. As a reading they describe a man's projections becoming less about him.
The FindingThe Eve–Helen–Mary–Sophia ladder is a single paragraph (§361) in the introduction to a 1946 alchemical study of the transference, where Jung asserts a late-classical pedigree, names no ancient source, and traces the only complete sequence to Goethe's Faust.

The Objection From Inside
Fifty years of argument from inside the tradition: is the content fixed by nature, or made by history?
SignificanceThe objection is that Jung read the conditions of his own society as facts of the psyche — that what he described as a woman's contrasexual nature was a description of women with no other authorised route to public thought. It was made by readers who stayed inside the tradition.
The FindingJung's gendering of anima and animus was contested from inside the tradition and with Jung's own tool: Goldenberg (Signs, 1976) proposed demoting the pair from archetype to archetypal image, making its Eros/Logos content historical and revisable.
